Since the pandemic, our team has been busier than ever helping single entrepreneurs and business owners show up confidently in front of the camera and on their (Zoom) video dates. We’re advising singles on how to dress appropriately for the boardroom and in the bedroom (Zoom date) for more intimate conversations. Connecting on camera can be challenging.

Let’s face it, being quarantined sucks; but your dating life doesn’t have to. As much as you would like to hit up your local bar with your date, our new reality has created limits on how your typical date night goes. That doesn’t mean you still can’t experience the fun and joy of your dating journey!

Dating during the pandemic has left singles wondering how to navigate through the digital world for connection. Imagine this, you’ve finally met someone, shared a few laughs over the phone or text, and now you are ready to have your very first virtual date. As a professional matchmaker and dating coach, I am often asked the question, “What do I wear on a video/Zoom date?”

So what do you wear on your video date? Many of us have made the mistake of pairing our fancy work blouse with our “I-should-probably-throw-out underwear” below the waist.

Here are five tips on how to prepare your virtual date night:

Bottoms Count

What to wear on a video date - bottoms count

Dressing up for your video date as if you were going out on a real date makes a big difference.

Yes, they do. Do you recall the awkward and embarrassing moment at the height of the pandemic in April when Will Reeves, a Good Morning America reporter, was caught wearing shorts below the waste?  If we had coached him for his interview, we could have saved him the embarrassment.

Does this mean you have to dress the whole nine yards? No. It will help if you put some effort into finding a pair of bottoms that will complement your top. Who knows where the virtual date will take you! You may end up dancing to your favourite tunes together or standing up and showing off that fine figure of yours. Or perhaps you may need to stand up and take a quick break. Either way, be prepared by wearing appropriate bottoms.

Know Your Colour

The colours you choose on a zoom date are important and carefully chosen based on the mood and impression you want to make.

92% of people in relationships remember what the other person wore on their first date. About two-thirds say it affected how attracted they were to their partner—understanding your colour scheme and which colours look flattering on your skin tone matters. Spice up your look by incorporating colours. We’ve noticed how many of our matchmaking and digital concierge clients see an immediate uptick in swipes and engagements with their online dating profiles when we change their black shirt to a colour that pops.

The most common colours singles typically worn are red, black and blue. These colours are known to be the most flattering and first-date appropriate. Unsure about which colours you want to wear? We suggest you stick with neutrals. Use neutrals such as white, black, grey, or beige tones. Neutral colours flatter everyone and are a great tone to match with almost anything you put on.

Comfort is Key

Wearing comfortable and stylish clothes on a zoom date is key to showing up with more confidence.

Playing matchmaker to thousands of singles throughout the years has taught me that singles can get quite nervous on a first date; especially when they choose the wrong outfit or have concerns about their appearance online or offline. The great thing about dressing for a video date is you can still dress for comfort. When you’re not fussing about your date outfit, your confidence shines through. No, this does not mean you can wear your favourite pyjamas. Yes, it does mean you can wear your favourite stretchy trousers. A great way to plan your look is to think “casual dressy”. What would you wear on a coffee or brunch date? Stick with pieces that are not too tight but not too loose. You still want to wear fitted clothing that is proportional to your body type and shape.

Make an Effort

What to Wear On

Make an effort when you are planning your video dates.

One thing so many of my matchmaking clients complain about after meeting someone they met online or on a video date is that they appeared not to have made much effort in trying to make an excellent first impression. Imagine showing up for an interview at your DREAM job looking like you just got out of bed? You can’t, and you would never do something like that. As an elite matchmaker to some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs, they understand the importance of presentation, personal branding and how their overall attire can make or break a connection or potential opportunity. When it comes to dating, singles are quick to judge.

We advise all of our clients to try on their entire look before going on dates. Wear the complete look standing and sitting in front of your camera. Although it’ll be more difficult to catch your date’s wardrobe malfunctions over a video date, you’ll still need to make sure there are no rips or stains. Making an effort indicates that you care. It shows that you are worthy and that you deserve respect. Put some time into planning your look. The earlier you plan, the more time you have to prepare.

Finally: Be Yourself

Always dress for your personality and lifestyle. Be authentic and have fun!

When you’re dressing for love, be you. Nothing is better than showing that you feel confident, sexy, and ready to connect. If you’re into vintage, wear your favourite vintage shirt. If you’re into classic attire, wear your favourite button-up top. No matter your genre, you want your clothing to represent YOU fully! Showing your personality and personal sense of style is essential. It not only makes you feel good; you feel confident and ready to move forward with your virtual date.

Your clothing is a reflection of who you are and what your goals are. If you don’t know your style, this is an excellent opportunity to play around with style to find out what your signature style is. The final message for you to take is to have fun and enjoy the process!
